Grants for Music Teachers
- Music teachers servicing kindergarteners through 12th-grade students are eligible to apply for a grant through the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation. The grant program is open to music teachers, individual students and youth music education programs in underprivileged communities. In lieu of cash grants, the foundation supports youth music education by providing qualified applicants with new or refurbished musical instruments for classroom use and financing the repair of damaged instruments. Teachers are encouraged to apply for two of the foundation's music program grants including the Melody and Special Projects programs which award up to $10,000 worth of music equipment and services.
- The Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA) participates in a number of programs that support children's music education throughout North, South and Central America. Educators who aspire to be music teachers can apply for the American Suzuki Institute Teacher Scholarships program. The program provides grants that cover registration fees and course tuition. SAA also partners with MusicLink --- a nonprofit children's music organization --- to offer music teachers "reimbursement grants" for the expense of student instruments and music equipment. As of 2010, SAA, MusicLink and volunteer music teachers have reached more than 2,800 music students nationwide.
- The Music Teacher National Association (MTNA) is a charitable organization with a mission to improve the value of children's music education through enhancing the professionalism of American music teachers. The MTNA Foundation Fund allocates funding to qualified applicants --- music educators --- through its Teacher Enrichment Grant program. Eligible music teachers receive cash awards that are applied towards music-related college-level coursework, private study, special projects and any studies that enhance their music teaching skills. The amount and value of grant awards vary annually depending on the number of applicants and the amount of available funds.
- The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics concentrates exclusively on supporting teachers of mathematics. However, music teachers who are collaborating with math teachers of pre-kindergarten through second-grade students may be eligible for a grant through the Using Music to Teach Mathematics program. The program offers some flexibility as it can be applied to single teachers and their classrooms or groups of teachers collaborating on a program to service multiple classes. In 2010 the maximum music grant award is $3,000 providing that the music curriculum has a primary focus of improving children's mathematical skills.
