Types of Adhesive Glue for Plastic
- Epoxy glues are comprised of two parts: resin and a hardener. These two parts chemically react when mixed together. It is this reaction that produces a very strong adhesive bond for nearly any surface type. Epoxy glues generally set quickly, often in five minutes or less, but that is dependent upon temperature. Because of the hardness of the bond created by the epoxy glue, flexible plastics should not be bonded with epoxy glues.
- Cyanoacrylate adhesive is easy to use and a viable option for bonding plastic to metal or rubber. Cyanoacrylate is a colorless and highly elastic adhesive. The set up time for cyanoacrylate adhesives is quick, often within two-to-five seconds on rubber and up to two minutes on plastic surfaces. One distinct advantage to Cyanoacrylate adhesives is that they are weather and aging resistant. Surface preparation is necessary for proper adhesion. Before applying, surfaces need to be free from oil, grease and other contaminants.
- Contact cement is an effective all-weather adhesive that creates a strong bond on many surfaces, including plastic. Contact cement's bond is permanent and water resistant. This particular adhesive is also resistant to household chemicals and actually become stronger as it ages. Contact cement is best used for bonding plastics, laminates and plastic veneers and, for this reason, is often used in for flooring and Formica countertops. Be aware, however, that contact cement is highly flammable and produces toxic fumes. So use it in open spaces with proper ventilation.
- Acrylic adhesive is useful for bonding both plastics and prepared metals. Acrylic adhesive is fast setting and is impact resistant. Other advantages of acrylic adhesives include their resistance to weather, water, oil and salt spray. This type of adhesive cures very quickly at room temperature and is also effective in temperatures from -40 to 250 degrees. Before applying, surfaces should be free from dirt, grease, mold and other contaminants for proper adhesion. Cleaning the surface with alcohol before applying the adhesive is recommended.
