How to Troubleshoot an Electric Furnace Heater
- 1). Look at your thermostat to make sure the system is turned on and that the thermostat setting is warmer than the current temperature of the home. Turn the thermostat up to see if the system turns on.
- 2). Check your breaker box to ensure that your furnace is getting power. It's possible a breaker has shut off to prevent an overload.
- 3). Locate the access panel on the main unit that covers the blower. It is frequently marked "Filter." Turn off the furnace power and open the panel. It is either propped up on hooks or is screwed in place.
- 4). Slide the filter out on its tracks to inspect it for clogging. If the filter looks dirty and is disposable, buy a new one. A nondisposable filter can be cleaned in accordance with instructions normally located on the filter frame.
- 5). Check around the motor and pulleys for any signs of torn or damaged belts. Any badly worn belts require replacement.
- 6). Secure all access panels tightly if your furnace is making excess noise, since the likely source is from the loose metal panels vibrating.
