If you create a good character that can make your story jump off the page, will get the reader engrossed.
That comes about if the character has more than one role in the story.

For instance; when a grandma gets caught for having two boyfriends she has been juggling with yet she has been keeping it secret.
More interesting parts like the police seeming to be the good guys and then suddenly turn out to be the bad ones.
Someone is breaking into homes yet no one can figure out the culprit Then he finally gets caught and it's a 10 year old trying to raise money for the dad's lawyer.
In the end, they will both need one.

The kidnapper may end up falling in love with the woman he kidnapped from which she gets freed.
Even the bad guy doesn't have to be the one in wrong all the time because they may have a weak spot for a single mom trying to raise three kids all by herself.

The older characters just because they are elders doesn't mean they can't have some fun hence they can be given something to do apart from being good.
Grandma can dye her hair pink while the grandpa can go to the porno show after which he gets busted while coming out.
It can be fun when the grandpa roller skates with the grand kids.
It's better to give the reader what they don't expect because it keeps them on the edge trying to guess what will happen next.
