What If I Have to Go to the Hospital in Shanghai?

105 19
There are a lot of hospitals, clinics, and dentists in Shanghai to meet the needs of the large population, but not all of them have good doctors or equipment. In terms of ownership, most hospitals in Shanghai are owned and operated by the government, only 24 of them are private and just a few of them are foreign.

Foreigners usually like to choose foreign hospitals that are covered by their insurance company, though their insurance may also cover several local hospitals. Though often overlooked, local alternatives can lead to lower fees for satisfactory service and surroundings. However, if you do not have insurance, it can be expensive to be seen by a doctor, especially if your stay in the hospital becomes an overnight one. In these cases, it may be best to choose a government hospital.

Government owned hospitals fall into three categories: City/District/Street. The city-level hospitals are the best. Most of these hospitals have a department for foreigners called "¤-®--" (wai4 bin1 men2 zhen3). The doctors in this department can speak English better than their colleagues and are usually accustomed to seeing foreigners on a daily basis. However, the cost to be seen in this department will be somewhat higher than the common alternative.

The procedure that one has to undergo to see a doctor is kind of complicated and requires a bit of explanation.

Step 1
First you need to go to the reception counter. You should tell them what ails you so that they can direct you to the relevant department.

Step 2
They will give you a piece of paper indicating which department you should go to. But before that, you will need to go to the registration counter to pay the registration fee, or "‚·" (gua4 hao4 fei4) in Chinese, which will run you about 10-20 RMB. Note that this step usually takes a long time since there is always a long line.

Step 3
After the registration fee is paid, you should then seek out your appointed department and then proceed to wait for a while. After another long line, you will finally be able to see the doctor.

Step 4
If any prescriptions are given, you can go to the Medicine department to pay for and obtain your medicine.
