If you can save on impractical travel expenses, you can use the savings to upgrade your travel insurance. There are those that can even cover your luggage from damage or loss. This is a reasonable upgrade since the insurance cost is way smaller than the value of your luggage. This is a kind of travel expense that has more benefits than its monetary value and this is the kind of expense that you should not get thrifty on.

Travelling smart is to lessen your travel expenses. But it does not mean that you save on everything you can. It is about saving on less important things to be able to cover the more important ones.
