    Semester at Sea Awards

    • The nonprofit Institute for Shipboard Education, or ISE, offers Semester at Sea scholarships and grants for summer travel on a shipboard university. For example, as of 2011, merit scholarships valued between $250 and $3,750 were available to students with a cumulative 3.25 GPA. Other awards include $2,000 work-study grants requiring two hours of daily work in library services, technology services, the administrative office, the campus store or other positions. The ISE also partners with the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, NSCS, in sponsoring the Scholar at Sea summer scholarship. Only NSCS first- and second-year undergraduate members with a minimum 3.4 GPA are eligible for this scholarship, worth $5,900 as at 2011.

    National Park Service Research Internship

    • The National Park Service, NPS, offers the Our World Underwater Scholarship Society Internship Program. This program provides opportunities for a summer intern to work in more than 70 ocean parks or 130 national parks with vast underwater resources. U.S. citizens ages 20 to 26 are preferred internship applicants. Requirements include an advanced open water certification and a minimum of 50 documented dives, a current dive physical and ability to complete the NPS diving exam. Knowledge of computers and web design are important, because the intern produces a blog about the internship, plus a report and multi-media presentation following the three-month program. As of 2011, the value of the internship was a maximum of $10,000, plus park-based accommodation.

    Study Abroad Italy Scholarships

    • As its name suggests, Study Abroad Italy, or SAI, offers summer and other educational and cultural programs in Rome, Florence and selected Italian cities, but without the language barrier. All courses offered by California-based SAI are in English, with U.S. university credit available. Courses provide lessons in Italy's history, culture, geography, food, art and people. As of 2011, SAI offered two $500 summer session scholarships for U.S. university or college students enrolled in an SAI Full Program. The scholarships apply to any summer session program at any SAI location. Scholarship applications require a personal statement, two letters of recommendation, a transcript and 1040 tax forms.

Elizabeth Gardner Norweb Summer Environmental Scholarship

    • The Garden Club of America encourages undergraduates to consider a future in environmental field work or research by way of awarding a number of summer scholarships. Among them is the annual Elizabeth Gardner Norweb Summer Environmental Scholarship, applicable after the freshman, sophomore or junior year. The scholarship supports summer coursework in an area of the student's choosing, such as marine science, oil spill cleanup and control, or hazardous waste. Applications require an essay, two letters of reference and a transcript. As of 2011, the scholarship value was $2,000.
