Patchwork Projects That Involve No Sew Techniques and Sewing
- Create cute greetings cards by sticking small squares of colored paper onto card stock. Cut or tear different colored paper into small squares for your patchwork. Make a basic card by folding a sheet of card stock in half, then sketch a design on it. Use craft glue to stick on squares, placing them side by side, until you've filled in the design. For large areas of a particular color, use squares in different shades rather than staying with exactly the same color all the way through, such as alternating squares of light and deep blue when depicting the sky.
- Brighten up a plain tote bag with squares of scrap fabric glued into a patchwork design. Sketch several different sized squares next to each other in an abstract design on the front of your tote bag using dressmakers chalk. Cut out small pieces of different colored fabric and stick them down inside the squares. Place them either edge to edge or overlapping slightly so there are no gaps. Use various shades of the same color for each square, such as mixed shades of pink for one square, blue for the second, and yellow for third.
- You don't have to be able to sew to create a patchwork cushion cover. Just use fabric glue to stick squares of different colored fabric onto the front of a plain cover. To ensure the squares are the correct size, sketch around the cushion cover onto a sheet of blank paper. Lay different squares of fabric next to each other on the paper in the pattern you will use on the cover. Use a ruler and dressmakers chalk to draw a line marking the edge of the cover on any pieces that would overlap the edge, trim as necessary then place back on the paper. Lift each piece from the paper one at a time and glue onto the corresponding place on the cushion cover until all pieces are stuck down.
- Turn a plain wood storage box into a patchwork ornament with decoupage, a craft that involves pasting paper cutouts onto an object to create a painted effect. Cut different sheets of paper into squares. Spread a coat of craft glue over the surface of the box. Dampen each square with water and carefully lay it on the box, brushing it into place with more craft glue. To create a patchwork effect, place different colored squares of paper next to each other and continue till the whole surface of the box is covered with squares. Allow to dry and varnish with a final coat of clear craft glue.
