Types

• Tropical flowering plants come in many shapes and sizes, such as large shrubs like hibiscus and bird of paradise, vines such as bougainvillea and passion flower or ground covers like lily turf or jasmine. Tropical plants tend to have rich-colored leaves as well as large, showy flowers.

• Most tropical plants need well-drained but consistently moist soil. Don't let your tropical flowering plant remain in standing water as this will damage your plant's roots. • Tropical plants often grow in filtered light under the canopy of larger trees; however, especially in non-tropical climates, most tropical plants need full or partial sun. Less than six hours of sun a day will result in fewer blooms on your plant.
  
  

Climate

• Tropical plants cannot tolerate below-freezing weather, and even one night of frost will damage the leaves and flowers and may kill your tropical plant. If you live in a colder zone, plant your tropical plant in a container to move indoors when the weather drops below 40 degrees Farenheit. Tropical climates in the United States are found in zone 11, or Hawaii, and parts of California and Florida.
  
  

Care

• Most tropical plants need organic rich soil. Fertilize your tropical plant in the spring before new growth begins. Tropical plants benefit from a light pruning after flowering. Tropical plants are accustomed to two seasons: wet and dry. If your tropical plant hasn't flowered, try reducing the water for four weeks and then watering as usual to encourage blooming.
