How to Grow Yellow Squash From Seed

    • 1). Plant yellow squash seeds during mid-spring about two weeks after the final frost of the season. Choose a planting location that receives six to eight hours of direct sunlight and that has fertile, well-drained soil.

    • 2). Form a small hill in the soil and sow five yellow squash seeds in the hill about one inch deep. Allow 48 inches between each hill for multiple plantings. Water immediately after planting and continue watering once every four days until the sprouts are about three inches tall.

    • 3). Thin each hill by cutting the three weakest plants to the ground, leaving behind only the two strongest yellow squash plants. Spread a one-inch layer of mulch over the soil surrounding the remaining plants to suppress weeds and insulate the soil.

    • 4). Water yellow squash once per week to prevent the soil from drying out completely. Do not splash any water on the foliage, as moist leaves are more susceptible to pests and disease. Apply water in the early morning so excess moisture can evaporate before temperatures drop.

    • 5). Feed yellow squash plants once per month using a balanced 10-10-10 NPK fertilizer. Water the squash before and after fertilizing to release nutrients into the soil and prevent root burn. Apply the fertilizer following the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

    • 6). Harvest yellow squash during early summer once the fruit has reached about eight inches in length and two inches in diameter. The fruit should be shiny and bright yellow in color. Carefully pick the fruit from the vine and store in the refrigerator for up to three days.
