How to Care for a Calathea Medallion
- 1). Place calathea medallion in low, filtered sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight and hot windows, which can damage the leaves.
- 2). Create a humidity tray for the plant, as calathea medallion does best in high humidity. Place a layer of small stones or pebbles on a tray, and add a small amount of water. Place the calathea's pot on the pebbles, but don't allow the water to touch the bottom of the pot.
- 3). Water calathea medallion when the top few inches of potting soil feel dry to the touch, but the soil is still moist deep down. Water the plant with room temperature water. Let the plant drain thoroughly, and never allow the pot to stand in water.
- 4). Keep calathea away from cold rooms, drafty doors or windows, air conditioner vents or heating vents.
- 5). Re-pot calathea medallion to a larger container if the plant becomes rootbound, indicated by slower than usual growth, or hard, compacted soil that won't absorb water. Move the plant into a container only one size larger, filled with commercial potting mix. Be sure the container has at least one bottom drainage hole.
