Improving Your Memory With Nutrients From Healthy Foods

105 12
Improving your memory can be done in many ways. One is by naturally enhancing memory by making sure your diet supplies you with essential nutrients. Eating well balanced diet containing appropriate foods in suitable amounts will definitely nourish both your brain and body.
Healthy Fats
The brain is made up mostly of fats. These fats serve as insulation and protection for the nerve cells in the brain. Thus, you need to load your diet with healthy kinds of fats such as Omega-3 fatty acids that the brain uses to repair its self and grow more neurons. Omega-3 comes from salmon, tuna, walnuts, olive oil, canola oil, eggs and wheat germ.
High Quality Protein
Proteins needed by the brain are those high with tyrosine. Apart from neurons, the brain also has neurotransmitters (messengers bringing signals from a particular neuron to another). If you have inadequate neurotransmitters, the brain functions suffer. Neurotransmitters contain some parts such as the tryptophan that are not generated or made by the body. Your body needs to be supplied with certain foods that are necessary to produce tyrosine. These foods include eggs, dairy products, soy and seafood that can help improve your concentration and alertness. Be careful, though, not to eat such foods loaded with too much sodium and other unhealthy kinds of fats.
Antioxidants
As you age and get older, free radicals that are present in the bloodstream are said to damage the brain cells. Memory loss can result from this, but you can prevent this from happening by consuming foods high with antioxidants. Food sources of antioxidants are berries, carrots, broccoli, red grapes, garlic, soy, spinach, tea, whole grains and tomatoes.
Vitamins And Minerals
Some vitamins and minerals serve as your brain's building blocks such as B-vitamins, vitamin C, calcium and iron. These nutrients can be found in a variety of foods, particularly vegetables and fruits. Also, there are food supplements you can take to make sure you are regularly loading your body with these essential nutrients.
Water
Water is highly essential for the body and the brain. Drinking water is important in staying properly hydrated. It can be quite easy for some people to skip drinking water and thus make their body hydrated. The body is made up of water and you can easily lose body water just by sitting or sweating. Even a slight level of dehydration can already affect the brain's functioning. Dehydration can cause degradation of your mental ability and energy. Ideally, you need to drink eight glasses of water a day to stay hydrated.
Fiber
Fiber is not just good for losing weight, but also for having healthy brain. Fiber helps the brain by slowing down absorption of sugar. Nonetheless, you need to steadily and appropriately deliver fiber to the brain so as not to overload it. Food sources of fiber are dried fruits (apricots, raisins, and prunes), beans and peas (kidney beans, lima beans, and green peas), vegetables (spinach and broccoli), whole fruit, whole wheat (brown rice and barley), nuts and seeds (flaxseed and almonds).
