    Definitions

    • Neurolinguistic programming consists of three self-described components: neural, linguistic and programming. NLP is based on the theory that individuals experience the world through the senses and translate that information into conscious and unconscious cognitive processes. Thought processes activate the neural system, thus affecting emotions, behavior and physiology. The linguistic component refers to the way humans use language to manipulate the environment, conceptualize experiences and communicate with others. In NLP, linguistics studies how the words you speak influence your experience. Programming addresses how individuals mentally code experience. NLP shows people how to recode their experiences and organize their internal programing so that they can achieve desired outcomes.

    The Pillars of NLP

    • Four primary concepts are known as the pillars of NLP: rapport, sensory awareness, outcome thinking and behavioral flexibility. Rapport is an important aspect of interpersonal relationships and NLP can provide the mental dexterity to develop strong relationships with others (both personal and professional) while still maintaining self integrity. Sensory awareness refers to the fact that the world is rich with sensory information. NLP focuses on a person analyzing sensory perceptions and using natural sight, sound, touch, taste, feeling and smell to his benefit. Outcome thinking is an important part of NLP that emphasizes concentrating on what one wants as a way to avoid negative thinking. Behavioral flexibility teaches people to do something different when what they are currently doing is not working out. Flexibility is a key aspect of practicing NLP.

    An Example of NLP

    • Suppose you find yourself in a situation where you spent a great deal of money on computer software that you need to run your business. In addition, you spent a lot of time installing and configuring it on your system. However, the application just does not work. When you call the technical support number, the service people are rude and unhelpful. At this point, you can use the four pillars of NLP to navigate through the problem. First, you need to develop rapport with the manager of the customer service team so that he will hear your complaint. Next, you will need to engage your sense of hearing so that you can listen to what customer support is telling you. You will need to listen to your own feelings, control them, and decide how to best respond. You will also need to be particularly clear about the desired outcome of your complaint: Do you want a refund, a replacement or an apology? Finally, you need to be flexible so that you can settle for other options in the event that you don't achieve your desired outcome.

    More Information

    • There are numerous resources available online and in the library for learning more about neuro-linguistic programming. Nlpuniversitypress.com is an excellent encyclopedia of NLP -- a well-rounded and informative resource for beginning your study of the subject. The International Society of Neuro-Semantics (neurosemantics.com) is also full of information for beginners and more advanced practitioners of NLP techniques. The website of John Grinder (quantum-leap.com), one of the founders of NLP, is a good resource for a more advanced practitioner and contains free access to articles and books, along with links to other online sites and resources.
