Single-Flowered Peony Varieties

      Peonies are large, showy flowers with multiple petals that eventually reveal a yellow center; blooms are 5 to 6 inches in diameter. According to Peony Nursery, most varieties only produce a single blossom per plant. The flowers also have a reputation of sweet fragrance; it has even been used in perfumes. If you live in zones 3 to 8 you can easily grow one of these single-flowered peonies for vases, flower arrangements, or simply garden beauty.

    Creamy Varieties

      Athena is a rare type of peony that has creamy colored petals that turn a purplish pink around the center stamens. This peony is an early bloomer with a subtle fragrance. Plant height ranges between 30-34 inches. Bride's Dream is a uniquely designed peony blossom; it is a Japanese anemone form. The classic white petal curl up like a bowl around dozens of feathery white stamen and petaloids. Bride's Dream grows between 28 and 36 inches tall, blooming fragrant flowers in late season. This plant can grow side buds if you let it.

      Claire de Lune is a single-flowered variety that produces blooms in creamy to yellow hues around a rich golden center. There are 10 large petals on this flower that crinkle at the edges. This hybrid only grows to 32 inches tall and is slow growth.

    Red Varieties

      Blaze is a fire engine red, single-flowered peony variety that blooms early to midseason. The few large petals surround strong yellow stamens. This herbaceous hybrid grows between 28 and 34 inches tall.Flame is a vibrant berry red, single-flowered peony variety that produces no fragrance. Some blooms may end up more coral in color, surrounded by deep green leaves. This plant grows anywhere between 26 and 32 inches.Early Scout is a petite, single-flowered peony. Blossoms are only 3 inches in diameter and the plant grows between 18 and 24 inches long. The petals are deep red around soft, pale yellow stamen.

    Pink Varieties

      Bowl of Beauty is a pink, Japanese form, single-flowered peony. Petals are a rich soft pink rose that fade lighter towards the center; stamens are feathery and pale yellow. Bowl of Beauty might bloom anytime of the season. This is a common herbaceous variety that grows anywhere between 25 and 43 inches tall. Firelight is a bright pink peony with red stigmas and yellow stamen. Blossoms have a light smell. This variety grows 26 to 36 inches tall.Coral N' Gold is a peony variety with large, coral colored petals that cup squiggly stamen. The Plant Expert compares its appearance with that of a poppy. It blooms midseason on a 30 to 36 inch plant.
