Autumn Jewellery Trends

101 31
Autumn means changing leaves, changing weather and changing fashion. It's time to put away your summer clothes and replace them with outfits that will carry you stylishly through autumn and winter. Sadly, few of us can afford to buy a complete new wardrobe each season, but it's easy to reflect the new autumn trends by updating your accessories – especially jewellery!

Big and bold

The oversized jewellery trend that was so popular throughout summer looks set to continue – and grow! Choose earrings reaching down to the shoulders, necklaces made from huge chunks of rough cut semi-precious stones or deep collars and cuffs that are not merely making a statement but are positively shouting!

Colour is as important as size. If you love this autumn's colour block look in clothes, the obvious accessories will be jewellery in just one or two strong, vibrant colours: berry red, royal blue, golden yellow, deep violets and greens. But if you want to have fun mixing the latest rich patterns and prints, choose multi-coloured pieces that contrast or clash.

Layers

A variation on the oversized trend is to layer smaller pieces of jewellery. Try wearing at least six chains and necklaces together, an armful of bracelets and bangles, and several rings on each finger.

Chokers

If you only have one new piece of jewellery this autumn make it a choker. It could be a sparkly silver and crystal creation for evening wear or a string of tribal beads for daytime. The only rule is that it must fit snugly around the neck.

Pearls

Pearl necklaces, bracelets and earrings are a must-have if you're adopting this season's 1940's inspired fashion trend. But that doesn't mean pearls should be considered old-fashioned. Many young jewellery designers have combined pearls with all types of metals, gemstones, fabrics and plastics for their autumn collections, creating pieces that are unmistakably 21st century.

Hat and tie decorations

Hats are going to be important this autumn, and if you want yours to be noticed add an eye-catching brooch or hatpin. Seek out genuine vintage pieces in granny's jewellery box and antique markets, or buy a new piece in your favourite historic style.

Neckwear also featured strongly on the autumn catwalks: either masculine ties or more feminine scarves tied cravat-style or in large bows. Whichever you prefer, make them the centre of attention by decorating with brooches, pins or tie slides.

Wild animals

Forget cute puppies and kittens! This autumn, jewellery designers have taken their inspiration from more dangerous animals: big cats, wolves, snakes and eagles. Look out for golden claws, silver teeth, fur, feathers, animal skin patterns and gemstones that glow like jungle eyes.

Autumn jewellery trends might have originated in the fashion houses of London, Paris and Milan, but the friendly staff in your local independent jewellers will be able to show you the hottest fashions at very cool prices!
