Trees That Can Be Potted
- Lemon trees are traditional for pots, although in colder climates they need to winter indoors. Arbequina olive produces fruit in a hot, sunny site. Columnar apples bear fruit on short spurs along their trunks, growing 8 feet tall and 2 feet wide.
- Fothergilla blooms with airy white flowers in summer. Tree daphne bears fragrant blooms in late winter. Little Twist flowering cherry grows only 6 feet tall with zigzag branches.
- Dwarf conifers make good container plants. Dwarf lemon cypress with scented chartreuse foliage is a common choice. It grows to 10 feet. Cryptomeria japonica Knaptonensis grows 3 feet tall, with white-tipped foliage. Ellwood's pygmy cypress grows to 5 feet.
