North Carolina Teacher Scholarships
CFNC Prospective Teacher Scholarship Loan
The College Foundation of North Carolina offers scholarship support to future educators through the Prospective Teacher Scholarship Loan. This scholarship is available to high school seniors who have a grade-point average of 2.5 or above and received either an SAT score of at least 900 or an ACT score of 19 or better. Only students attending school in North Carolina as undergraduates are eligible. This scholarship provides up to $2,500 in annual tuition assistance for a recipient's freshman and sophomore years and up to $4,000 for a student's junior and senior years. Upon graduating, a student must work as a teacher in a North Carolina school for one year for every year of support received or risk having to repay the scholarship with interest.
North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program
The North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program is available to graduating high school seniors in North Carolina who plan to pursue a career in teaching. This program pays up to $6,500 per year for a total of four years. Recipients are selected on the basis of grade-point average, standardized test scores, writing samples, references and record of community service. A recipient of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Scholarship must work as a teacher in North Carolina for one year for each year of scholarship support received. If a recipient fails to fulfill his service obligation, he may be required to pay back all scholarship support received through the program.
CFNC Future Teachers of North Carolina Scholarship Loan
The CFNC Future Teachers of North Carolina Scholarship Loan is available in the amount of $6,500 per year to college juniors and seniors pursuing a degree in education. To be eligible, a student must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, must be attending school in North Carolina, and must be a legal resident of North Carolina. This scholarship is only available to students seeking certification in the areas of math, science, special education and ESL. Recipients must teach a minimum of three years in North Carolina schools within five years of graduating or repay the scholarship.
UNCA Department of Education Scholarships
The Department of Education at the University of North Carolina in Asheville awards several institutional scholarships to attending students. The J.W. and Rose Byers Scholarship Fund is available annually in the amount of $3,000. The Don & Marjorie Locke Scholarship is available each year in amounts of up to $500 to students within the department. The Dr. Linda C. Winner Scholarship is available in amounts of up to $1,000 to students who are residents of North Carolina.
