How to Plant Blanketflower Seeds

    • 1). Choose a sunny site with good drainage. Till the soil to a depth of 2 or 3 inches, and rake it fine. Moisten the soil with mist from a hose or sprayer if necessary, then scatter the seeds across the top of the soil. Cover with a light dusting of sand or fine soil to a depth of 1/4 inch. Keep the soil moist but not wet; seedlings usually appear in about three weeks and you should keep the soil moist till the seedlings become established. Thin the plants as they mature; ideal spacing is about 14 inches.

    • 2). Plant Indian blanketflowers in the fall if your winters are mild, and they will probably bloom in the spring. If your winters are harsh, plant seeds in the spring and expect your first blooms the following year. Blanketflowers grow well in zones 3 through 11, and can be planted in May in zones 7 or 8, or March in zones 9 through 11.

    • 3). Keep the soil moist after seeding and during spring sprouting. Water Indian blanketflowers during dry periods in the summer; they tolerate dry conditions well after the seedlings are first established. Irrigate lightly to help them thrive; blanketflowers don't need much watering or fertilization.
