How to Fix a Lawn
- 1). Rent an aerator from your local lawn and garden store. Follow the instructions provided with the aerator. If no instructions are provided, ask the lawn specialist at the store how to operate the equipment. Aerate your lawn.
- 2). Identify the problem areas. Use basic deduction to determine what is causing wear and tear on your lawn. If the grass is dying or fading where animals urinate or children play, your solution will be different than if dead spots or discoloration of grass appear out of nowhere.
- 3). Dig up and remove problem spots using your shovel, if you determine the cause is children or pets. Reseed the spot with the same variety grass seed as the type of grass you currently have. If you reseed with a different variety of grass, you will have a discolored spot.
- 4). Apply a pesticide for grubs. If you cannot identify the cause of dead or dying grass, it is most likely caused by grubs. Purchase a pesticide that has carbaryl (Sevin) or trichlorfon (Dylox) in it from your local lawn and garden store. Follow the instructions on the package for application. Water treated areas for 60 minutes after application.
- 5). Purchase general weed killer and fertilizer at your local lawn and garden store. Apply to lawn as directed on the package.
