A Test to Help Choose an Antidepressant?

Toward Personalized Psychiatry

Medscape: How far along is the test in the FDA approval process?

Dr Gordon: We are in the final phase of FDA evaluation of the test. They've been most helpful in discussing design aspects of the study and specific statistical analyses of the results over the past 3 years.

Medscape: Are there other similar tests available to help personalize psychiatric therapy?

Dr Gordon: There are a few studies in which group findings of cognitive profiles were associated with positive clinical response to treatments. But none yet have examined personalized predictions of treatment response.

Medscape: In the future, do you believe that clinical tests such as yours will incorporate genomic data to further personalize psychiatry treatment?

Dr Gordon: Yes.  The second test we have looks at how selected gene variants (or single-nucleotide polymorphisms) in the same patients complement the cognition/emotion scores to predict who is and is not likely to respond to antidepressants. The results of this genetic domain of the iSPOT study have recently been submitted for scientific publication.
