How to Install a Fly Mask on Your Horse

104 271
    • 1). Clean your horse. Loose dirt or hair on your horse can lead to rubbing and discomfort, so brush your horse's face and remove debris from the forelock (the hair between the horse's ears) before using the mask.

    • 2). Locate the ear holes on the mask and carefully insert your horse's ears through them. Some fly masks will cover the ears entirely while others leave the ears uncovered. The latter is better for horses that do not like having their ears handled.

    • 3). Pull the mask down over the horse's face so it covers the eyes. Secure the mask under your horse's throat and jaw area with the provided fasteners. Most will use a hook and loop closure such as Velcro. While the mask should stay firmly in place, make sure you still can fit a finger between the mask and your horse to ensure it isn't too tight.

    • 4). Remove and clean the mask daily. Check the mask for wear and tear and replace it if there is any damage. Keeping it clean will help prevent dirt and debris from getting in your horse's eyes or irritating its skin.
