Spring Bunching Plants
- Spring bunching plants are common and include plants of the onion family, such as Japanese bunching onion, Welsh onion, chives, leeks and scallions. The plants may be planted from sets, seed or plants.
- Features of spring bunching plants include small underground bulbs that produce greens early in the season. They have a pungent scent, tolerate cool temperatures well and are easy to care for.
- Spring bunching plants should be planted after the ground has begun to warm and the soil is pliable. Greens from onion sets will be ready for use within 30 days and within 50 days if planted from seed. Cured, or dry onions, from sets or plants can be harvested in 100 or more days from planting, depending on the variety grown, according to Ohio State University.
