How to Knit Easy Baby Booties
Things You'll Need
Instructions
1Choose a sportweight yarn. Many brands produce a line of yarns specifically for babies.
2
Knit a gauge square. 7 stitches should equal 1 inch. If the gauge is too small, try a needle size larger, and vice versa.
3
Cast on 10 stitches. Knit 36 rows in garter stitch. Leave the 10 stitches on the needle.
4
Use the other 3 needles to pick up and knit stitches along the other 3 sides of the rectangle. Pick up 18 stitches along the long sides and 10 stitches on the short side.
5
Purl around all 4 needles and join as a round. Purl 3 more rounds. Knit 4 rounds. Purl 4 rounds. Knit 4 rounds. Purl 4 rounds. You will end after purling across a long side.
6
Purl 9 across the next short side. Purl 2 stitches together: the last stitch on your needle and the first stitch from one of the long sides. Turn and knit across 9 stitches and knit 2 together at the end. Repeat these last 2 rows once. Turn and knit across 9 stitches, then knit 2 together. Turn and purl 9 stitches. Purl 2 together. Repeat these 2 rows one time. Repeat entire step one time. You now have 10 stitches on each of your 4 needles.
7
Knit 1, purl 1 around all 4 needles. Continue this for 3 rounds.
8
Make shoelace holes on the next round. Knit 1, purl 1. Cross the yarn over the needle and knit 2 together. Continue ribbing from past 3 round for 3 stitches. Continue from the to the end of the round.
9
Repeat step 7.
10
Knit 22 rounds. Bind off all stitches and cut the yarn, leaving a couple of inches. Weave in any loose ends with the tapestry needle. Roll down the tops of the booties.
Repeat all steps and make the second bootie.
11
Make the shoelaces. Cut a piece of yarn about 3 lengths of your own arm. Hold one end firm, either by tying it to an anchor point or by having someone hold it. Stretch the yarn taut and twist in until the yarn coils itself. Fold it in half and allow the two parts to coil. Smooth it between your fingers. Anchor one end and twist again, then fold it so it coils again. Tie a knot at the end with the loose ends. Make 2 of these. Lace these through the holes and tie them in a bow.
