How to Make a Rope Design Out of Clay
- 1). Roll a wad of polymer clay into a rope shape. Press down on the clay as you roll to make it thinner and longer. Assess the length; if you want to make it longer, make another coil of the same length and attach them by overlapping their ends and pressing them together.
- 2). Scoop up another wad of clay that is same size as the first wad. Roll it into the same length and thickness as the first clay piece. Press a piece of burlap against each piece to mimic the texture of rope in the clay.
- 3). Twist your two clay coils around each other, creating a tight spiral like an actual rope. Press the ends together at the top and bottom to ensure they don't unravel. Position the clay into your desired formation in your baking pan.
- 4). Bake your clay rope for 20 minutes at 270 degrees Fahrenheit or as according to the instructions on the polymer clay box. Allow your rope to cool. Coat it with a layer of shellac to give it a yellow finish and allow it to dry over night.
