How to Level a 42 Inch Lawnmower Deck on a Murray

    • 1). Drive your Murray riding lawnmower to a hard, flat surface, such as a driveway. Turn the mower off and set the parking brake. Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug.

    • 2). Use an air pressure tire gauge to check the tire pressure. Locate the recommended PSI on the tire's rim. If any of the tires are low, use an air compressor to fill them to the correct PSI. Leveling the 42 inch mower deck is not possible when the tires are not filled properly.

    • 3). Move the lift lever to either the lowest cutting height or the level adjustment position, depending on the model of your Murray riding lawnmower. If your mower has a level adjustment position, remove the two screws securing the cover around the lift lever on the lawnmower. This exposes the level adjustment position.

    • 4). Reach underneath your Murray lawnmower to locate the adjustment knobs. There are two knobs, one on the right and one on the left. They are located near the rear of the 42-inch mower deck, directly underneath the lift link. Turn each knob to loosen the mower deck. If you cannot turn the knobs by hand, use a wrench.

    • 5). Push down on both of the mower deck's sides until they are resting flat on the ground. Hand-tighten the adjuster knobs then use a torque wrench to finish tightening them. If your Murray riding lawnmower model has plastic knobs, tighten them to 7 foot-pounds. If the knobs are metal, tighten them to 10 foot-pounds.

    • 6). Move the lift lever to the lowest cutting height if it was in the level adjustment position. Replace the cover over the lift lever and secure it in place with the screws you removed. Push the spark plug wire back over the spark plug.
