Can I Divide Hostas in July?
- Identify the mature plants in your hosta garden. They are the ones that do not have new growth in the middle of the plant. You may also want to divide fast-growing hostas that are outgrowing their assigned place in the garden.
- You can divide the hostas in July provided no new growth is on the plant. Hostas transplant best when the ground is warm, such as during July and August.
- If you live in a region with early frosts, transplant your hostas early enough in July to give them 30 days to harden off. Hostas must be hardened off to survive winter weather.
- Hosta ventricosa is the only one of the 1,200 species that does grow true from seed.
