Just because you have come to terms with the fact that you need a hearing aid, does not mean that you will have no problem adjusting to one.
Dealing with change is hard sometimes, and even the best hearing aids will demand a little adjustment period.
Don't expect to fall in love with it overnight, or to completely forget that you are wearing it right away, but with a little time, it will become like an old reliable friend.
Get Acquainted Before you place the device in your ear, take a little time to get acquainted with it.
Read through the manual or any included instructions and make sure that you are comfortable with operating any available controls.
Some of the best hearing aids will feature volume control, low battery warning, multi-memory indicator and more.
There is nothing worse than walking into a busy restaurant for the first time and not knowing how to quickly make appropriate adjustments so you are more comfortable.
Take it Slow Although most people will say that after a while, you won't even realize you have one in your ear, you can expect it to feel a little weird, when you first start wearing your hearing aid.
It won't hurt, and it certainly should not feel uncomfortable, but you will be aware of it.
If you have ever put a collar or a leash on a puppy for the first time, then you will understand.
It is not hurting them, but they do need a little time to get used to it.
It is perfectly fine to take it slow.
Wear it for short periods of time and gradually extend these time frames.
Then you will notice that there will be a day when you just forget to take it out because you simply stop noticing it.
Whatever you do, don't give up too soon.
The worst thing you can do is wear it too long the first couple days until you are irritated and toss it in the junk drawer.
Tell Your Friends and Family One of the biggest fears many people have is telling their family and friends that they are wearing one.
You have absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about.
The sooner you are open with them, the more comfortable you will feel wearing it around them.
Read Aloud Hearing yourself talk is a pretty big adjustment.
Chances are good that when you are first getting used to your hearing aid, you will be alone.
Then, when you finally are in a situation where you need to speak, you feel all disoriented.
The quickest way to get used to hearing yourself is to spend a little time reading aloud every day.
