Tinnitus is the perception of a sound in the ear or head that is not produced by any outside source.
It can be high-pitched whistling, ringing or buzzing.
The sound may be constant.
Tinnitus is mostly linked to hearing loss which is more common to older people who experience hearing difficulties.
Causes of tinnitus include Meniere's disease, ear infections, ear inflammations, wax blocking your ear, head injury, hypertension, acoustic neuroma, high doses of medicine and many more.
Though there are no effective medications proven to cure tinnitus, there are tinnitus vitamins and treatment if one is affected by the said disorder may consider helpful.
A daily dose of Vitamin B-1 ranging from 100 to 500 mg.
can help prevent tinnitus.
Vitamin B-1 or Thiamine supplements relieve tinnitus, which acts through a stabilization of the nervous system.
Vitamin B-3 or Niacin, Nicotinic acid is important for the proper breakdown of fats, proteins and carbohydrates.
This vitamin supports circulation, makes skin healthy and helps in the proper functioning of the central nervous system.
A minimum of 50 mg and maximum of 500 mg is recommended to be taken twice per day.
Vitamin B-6 or pyridoxine is water soluble and it cannot be stored inside the body.
This can help in the breakdown of fats, proteins, carbohydrates and in the production of hormones, red blood cells and enzymes.
This type of vitamin is also required for the production of serotonin.
Vitamin B-12 provides relief in many patients infected with severe tinnitus.
Since Vitamin B-12 is poorly absorbed when consumed, the suggested daily dose is 1000 mcg.
It is better absorbed when it is dissolved under the tongue or through injection.
It is also important to consider Folic Acid or folate as one of the remedies for tinnitus.
It is recommended to have a dosage ranging from 400 to 800 daily.
This should be taken for two to four months for effective results.
Lack of Vitamin A can lead to inner-ear problems like ear ringing.
This type of vitamin is essential for the membranes of the ear.
In a study conducted, it was found that low blood levels of Vitamin A were associated with decreased ability to hear.
There are also 24 to 74% of people who testified that Vitamin A supplements gave them a partial relief from tinnitus.
Zinc is also an essential tinnitus vitamin.
This can eliminate the ear sounds suffered by older patients.
Do not take more than 80 mg a day without supervision from your doctor.
The treatment that you should undergo depends on what is causing your tinnitus.
It is also important to let the doctor know if it is already constant or associated with hearing loss.
You should first be evaluated by your doctor.
All patients with unexplained tinnitus should undergo audiogram or hearing test.
Other tests that may be applicable to the patients are auditory brain stem response (ABR), computer tomography scan (CT scan) or magnetic resonance imaging.
Any of these may be done to determine whether there is an existing tumor on the hearing because tumors can also cause tinnitus.
