How to Troubleshoot a Central Air Conditioning System

104 21
    • 1). Start with simple fixes. Look at the circuit breaker for the air conditioning system. (See reference 1.) Make sure the circuit is in the "on" position and that there is electricity to the air condenser outside as well as the blower or fan inside. Check that the thermostat is set to cool. Adjust the thermostat to a temperature high enough to cause the air conditioner to run. Clean the air filter or replace it.

    • 2). Clean the air conditioning unit if it runs but doesn't cool. (See references 2.) Turn off the air conditioner at the circuit box. Remove leaves and debris from the outside of the unit. If necessary, prune bushes surrounding the air conditioner so that it can get air. Unscrew the grill cover and remove it. Use a soft brush to clean the fins. You can use the brush attachment on a vacuum to do this as well. Do not damage the fins. Cover the motor with a plastic trash bag so you don't get it wet. Use a sprayer nozzle attached to a hose to wash out the condenser. Reattach the grill and turn the electricity back on to the air conditioner.

    • 3). Check the condenser. Reset the pressure button by pushing it in if it's sticking out. Touch the larger of the two copper lines coming out of the condenser. If it's warm, there's a problem with the condenser and you should call a repair technician. If the copper tube is cold or frozen, there's a circulation problem inside the house. Open more vents and make sure the vents that are open have no obstructions in front of them. If the unit continues to freeze, it needs more Freon to operate efficiently. A technician must add it.
