How to Trellis Zucchini

104 17
    • 1). Purchase a vine trellis from a gardening center that stakes into the ground.

    • 2). Sow your seeds or transplant your zucchini seedlings into your garden.

    • 3). Use a compass to determine which direction is north.

    • 4). Stake your trellis into the ground on the north side of your plants, about 6 inches from the plant. This will prevent blockage of southern exposure.

    • 5). Train your zucchini to climb your trellis by gently lifting and arranging vines on the trellis supports.

    Rope Trellis

    • 1). Use a rope trellis for an inexpensive way to trellis a row of zucchini plants. Push a 4-foot stake about a foot deep into the soil at one end of the row at the time you sow seeds or transplant seedlings.

    • 2). Skip two plants and place another stake between the second and third plants. Skip two more plants and place another stake in between the fourth and fifth plants. Continue this down the row.

    • 3). Place a stake at the opposite end of the row.

    • 4). Tie twine to the stake at one end, about 4 to 6 inches from the soil line. Run the line to the next stake and tie it 4 to 6 inches above the soil line. Continue running it from stake to stake, tying it, keeping it level, until you reach the end of the row.

    • 5). Tie on another line of twine down the row, about 4 to 6 inches above the first. Tie a third and fourth, each one 6 inches above the last.

    • 6). Gently move any developing branches onto the rope as your zucchini plants grow. This will train the plants. The zucchini will begin to climb and spread out on the "rope ladder."

    • 7). Add more lines of rope if needed as your zucchini grows.

    Tomato Cage

    • 1). Use a tomato cage for a quick and easy trellis. Tomato cages provide support all around the plant and are especially good for container gardening.

    • 2). Sow your seeds directly into the soil, or transplant young seedlings.

    • 3). Center a tomato cage, narrow-side down, over your zucchini plant.

    • 4). Push your tomato cage into the soil, up to the first horizontal line.

    • 5). Arrange your zucchini vines over the tomato cage wires as they grow to train it.
