How to Make a Moss Hanging Basket
- 1). Wet the sphagnum moss thoroughly by placing it in a bucket of water. If necessary, place a stone or other weight on top of the moss to keep it under the water until the moss is completely saturated. Wear the plastic gloves when handling the moss.
- 2). Remove the wet moss and squeeze out the extra water.
- 3). Press pieces of moss around the wires at the bottom of the wire basket. Add moss to a depth of 2-inches. Pack the moss tightly so the soil you will be adding later will not leak out.
- 4). Work your way up, pressing moss around the basket, until you reach the top. The moss should be at least 2-inches thick all the way around and packed tightly.
- 5). Decide where you will be putting your hanging basket. Use the pliers to separate the chain into three lengths, each piece approximately twice as long as the vertical distance from the hook you will use to hang your basket to where you want the final height of the basket rim.
- 6). Attach the three pieces of chain by feeding each through the top rung of the basket. Make sure each chain is spaced equidistant from the other so the basket will not tilt. Make sure the chains will be strong enough to hold the pot when it is soaked with water again. Gather all three chains together, and use the S-hook to hold the chains together and then later to hang the basket.
- 7). Drape pieces of moss over the top basket wire and squeeze the moss tightly so it grips the rung. Cover the entire top rung.
- 8). Fill the basket halfway with potting soil. Your moss hanging basket is now ready to plant.
