How to Retrieve Taxes Filed Online
- 1). Visit or call the office of your tax preparer and request a copy of your filed return. Since most preparers file returns using online software, your preparer should be able to access your return and provide you with a copy. Also, the majority of tax preparers keep a copy of their client's tax returns on file for their own records. Franchise tax services such as H&R Block close their field offices after tax season. In this case, you'll need to call the H&R Block customer service line at 1-888-OUR-HRBB. If the customer service line is of no assistance, you'll need to take matters into your own hands.
- 2). Log on to the home page of the online tax preparation service you used to file your return. Once there, sign in using the user name and password you created when you filed the return. If you cannot recall the user name or password, or the user name and password were not created by you, use the "lost password" prompt to retrieve the password. If this doesn't work, call the customer care line of your online tax service.
- 3). Call the Internal Revenue Service at 1-800-826-1040 and request that a copy of your return be mailed to you. If you need the return in a hurry, request that the return be faxed. Keep in mind that the IRS uses an automated service which makes three attempts to fax the return within a 48 hour period. Be sure to provide the IRS with a secure fax line such as your home or e-fax to protect your information. Keep in mind that IRS guidelines prohibit a return to be faxed unless the taxpayer is physically located at the fax machine during the time of the call.
