How to Create a Walkway With Paving Stones
- 1). Decide where the walkway will be. Try to work with a piece of area that is relatively level. Use a string or hose to outline where the walkway will lie. Use spray paint to more permanently mark the area.
- 2). Dig the walkway. You will need to dig at least six or seven inches deep. This will allow for the crushed gravel, layer of sand, and paving stones.
- 3). Level the dirt. Once you have the walkway dug out completely, use a level to slightly grade the walkway away from your home. Moisture will run away from your home if you do this.
- 4). Lay down three to four inches of crushed rock or gravel. Use the compactor to settle the gravel. This will help avoid settling later.
- 5). Install an edging. You will want to keep the grass out of your paving stones. Installing an edging will help your paving stones to stay grass-free and in place. Typically, a plastic edging pounded in place with large galvanized nails will do the trick.
- 6). Add sand. The sand should be about 1 ½ inches thick. Level the sand on a slight grade away from the house.
- 7). Install the paving stones. Carefully lay out the paving stones. Use a rubber mallet to help place them. Be sure each stone is level as you go.
- 8). Spread sand into the crevices between the stones. Water slightly with a hose to help settle the sand, and repeat until the crevices are completely filled.
