Materials

• The base of this craft is a large brown paper bag, such as the kind from a grocery store. Treats like candy and small toys are needed for the pinata, and tissue paper, string, and streamers are also materials for the craft. Tools necessary for the birthday craft are a stapler, tape, single-hole paper puncher and glue. Optional items are googly eyes and paint.
  
  

Preparations

• Fill the large brown bag with the toys and candy. If the craft is for a classroom project, check with the school for any restrictions on candy and toys. Be sure to choose toys that are safe for kindergartners. Roll down the paper bag twice and then staple it shut. Punch out two holes at the top of the bag where you sealed it.
  
  

Crafts

• Invite the children to cut strips of tissue paper, approximately 3 inches wide and 10 inches long. With scissors, cut fringes into the bottom half of the strips. Glue these strips in rows all along the bag to decorate it. As an option, the children can paint the brown bag with colorful tempura paint before adding the tissue paper. Googly eyes can also be added to create a face.
  
  

Completion

• Attach long streamers to the bottom of the pinata with glue and thread string from the holes in the top. It can be tied to a hook from the ceiling in the corner of the room or hung outside on a tree. The children hit the pinata with a soft bat or newspapers rolled up. As an added element to the game, you can blindfold the children when hitting the pinata. Give every child two swings so all can participate.
