How to Plant Mayhaw
- 1). After the last frost, enrich the soil where you will plant the tree. Till the ground; mix in peat moss or compost and a slightly acidic garden soil.
- 2). Dig a hole two times as big as the depth and width of the root ball. If planting more than one tree, space 15 to 20 feet apart.
- 3). Gently loosen the root ball; set it in the hole. The top of the root ball should sit slightly higher than ground level. Fill in with leftover soil and tamp down gently.
- 4). Water thoroughly after planting. Water two times a week. Soak the root system well each time you water. As a rule, 1 inch of water per week is all the tree needs.
- 5). Use a slow release balanced fertilizer three times a year: February, May and July. Do not fertilize at the time of planting. If planting in early spring, wait until May to fertilize. When fertilizing use approximately 1 cup of fertilizer for each year of life of the tree, i.e.: 1 cup for 1 year old, 2 cups for 2 years, etc. Spread the fertilizer over the root zone out 2 inches from the trunk; water in thoroughly.
