Care Instructions for Laminate Wood Floors

104 9
    • 1). Use a dust mop every day on the laminate flooring. Dust and dirt particles act as an abrasive on the flooring surface. A build-up of dust and dirt may not be visually apparent, but the particles weaken the top layer. The shine may dull and the decorative image may be vulnerable to damage.

    • 2). Vacuum once or twice a week using the upholstery attachment. Run the attachment over the seams to remove loose dirt and dust from between the planks.

    • 3). Clean the laminate flooring using a spray product designed specifically for laminate flooring. Spray the product onto the floor and clean with a cloth. Mop handles equipped with flat heads for soft cloths are available and recommended for this type of damp mopping.

    • 4). Do not use a wet mop or soap and water solution to clean the laminate flooring. The moisture breaks down the cellulose paper and decorative photographic image, exposing the wood core to the water. Water warps the core, causing the planks to buckle.

    • 5). Wipe up any spills immediately with a dry cloth. If necessary, use a cloth dampened with water to wipe up sticky substances or remove spills that have set for a brief time. If a stain appears, apply the laminate cleaner directly to the area and wipe with a cloth. Wipe dry with a soft cloth after treatment.

    • 6). Use furniture disks or blankets when moving furniture across the laminate flooring. The top layer is vulnerable to scratches and gouges from excess pressure. Place floor protectors beneath couch legs and other heavy furniture to prevent the furniture from creating depressions in the flooring over time.

    • 7). Avoid exposure to stiletto-heeled shoes, skate shoes, skateboards and golf shoes, as any of these may damage the laminate finish.

    • 8). Do not sand or use a refinishing product on laminate flooring. Sanding destroys the protective layers and exposes the core of pressed wood. Refinishing products break down the cellulose paper and destroy the decorative image of the flooring.
