Screen Play Writing Takes Focus

103 13
Not long ago, I met an acquaintance who'd had moderate success in Hollywood acting, playing in a band, and lately in writing screen plays.
He's also been a little bit of a crazy man, you know that whole party scene, and yes, like Paris Hilton and that crowd, he'd also gotten into a little trouble.
Today, he's all sobered up, I guess is the proverbial lingo in Hollywood - and he's back to writing while he rebuilds, and he has a 9-5 job.
He's also a dad with joint custody, and thus, he's busy.
Still, even with that creative mind, which has to be in the creative mood to make it happen, he always seems to find an excuse to do his writing and creating later, it's always some excuse.
Anyway, we'd met a few times to go over various scripts and ideas - mostly in the Sci Fi venue, which I quite fancy.
He is more into the Sci Fi fantasy and horror genres, which I guess he can relate too being around his former band and Goth-like roadies and followers.
He's had one screenplay turned into a "B-Movie" and another hosted at Sundance - which is pretty cool in its own right.
Nevertheless, I noted as we got together and went over ideas, he always had some place to be, and was always in a hurry, even though while talking our creative juices were flowing.
Then he snapped back into the real world to pick up kids, get to his job, or go take care of some personal business.
What he should have done was gotten to work right then and there, and put together the plot, develop characters, rehearse a dialogue in his mind and get it onto paper, but alas, always an excuse.
One visit he gave me an old screenplay - it was outstanding, and I am not just saying that, and he wanted me to go over it and make suggestions, help him edit it all.
I did.
I gave him all my notes, and we were to meet again; 5-weeks later he calls to get together? Five weeks later? Come on, is that really someone who is serious about their craft? If you want to write a screenplay, you have to do it, it's a lot of work, and there is no room for excuses.
Needless to say, we haven't met since, he's not serious, and I've got more important things to do, than to listen to someone's life problems and excuses.
If you want to win in this business, you have to commit and be dedicated to go the distance.
Focus on getting it done, not on reasons why you can't.
Please consider all this.
