What Kind of Light Does a Hydrangea Need?
- Macrophyllas hydrangeas (mopheads and lacecaps), the most common hydrangeas, grow best in morning sun and afternoon shade. Hydrangeas located in the northern half of the United States are able to receive more than half-day's worth of sun every day.
- Oakleaf hydrangeas grow in sun or shade, but prefer afternoon shade in hot climates. Their leaf color will improve for fall display if they receive sun.
- For hot weather climates, grow peegee hydrangeas--they tolerate full sun all day, as long as they receive enough water.
- Hydrangeas do not do well in full shade, such as under the shade of a dense tree. Hydrangeas placed in full shade will have minimal flowers during their bloom season.
- Oakleaf (hydrangea quercifolia) is winter-hardy and survives where other hydrangeas cannot. They are low-maintenance shrubs and provide seasonal leaf color and interest in the fall.
