How to Install Exterior Doors in a Brick Wall
- 1). Stand the pre-hung door unit in the doorway, inside the wood jamb that's along the inner edge of the brick opening. The casing of the door should line up with the interior edge of the jamb.
- 2). Set your carpenter's level on the vertical edge of the door unit. Slide shims in around the outer side of the casing, wedging them against the jamb until the door is level and plumb.
- 3). Open the door widely enough to get at the inner edge of the casing behind the hinge side of the door. Drive 2 1/2-inch screws through the casing into the wood door jamb. Shoot the screws every 10 to 12 inches along both vertical edges of the casing.
- 4). Cut off the overhanging shims with a razor knife.
- 5). Use your screw gun to take out the middle screw from each hinge. Set a 2 1/2-inch screw in its place so it goes through the casing and into the jamb.
