When to Sod Zoysia
- The ideal time to lay new zoysia grass sod is late spring and early summer. The rising soil temperatures promote root growth, and springtime and summer rains help keep the soil moist. Warmth changes the grass from tan to green.
- Regardless of when it is sodded, zoysia must not dry out completely. If laid when tan and dormant, it should be installed on moist soil. Rainfall or melting snow must be supplemented to keep the sod roots damp until warmth returns in spring and the roots grow into the soil.
- When zoysia is dormant in winter, sunny but cool weather with lots of wind can dry out the sod and topsoil to put the grass in drought stress. One-half inch of rain or irrigation weekly in winter is enough to sustain the grass until spring.
