How do I Build a Wall With Paver Blocks?
- 1). Calculate the trench depth so it will be deep enough for 6 inches of foundation, plus another inch for every 8 inches of the height of your finished wall. So a 4-foot wall will need a 12-inch trench, 6 inches for foundation and 6 inches to accommodate the height.
- 2). Use a shovel to dig a 12-inch wide trench to the depth determined in step 1.
- 3). Lay a foundation of wall rock 5 inches deep in the trench and compress it using a manual compacter. The foundation should be very steady and not shift at all under your feet.
- 4). Pour a layer of sand on top of the foundation to 1 inch deep.
- 5). Set the first row of the paver blocks on top of the foundation in the trench. The row should be set neatly in the trench and the blocks should not overlap at all.
- 6). If you are building a retaining wall, fill the gap behind the wall with wall rock so it is level with the blocks. You need to compact this rock in the same way you did the foundation. Do this for each row of blocks you lay.
- 7). Lay additional rows on top of the first one in a pattern of your choice. As you lay the rows, regularly check if the wall is level using a carpenter's level.
- 8). Set heavy, solid capping stones on top of your finished wall for extra stability and protection.
