How to Open an Estate Checking Account
- 1). Obtain a taxpayer ID number from the IRS issued in the name of the estate. You can apply to the IRS for a taxpayer ID number using the IRS website or by using an IRS Form SS-4 "Application for Employer Identification Number" mailed to the IRS at the address indicated in the form instructions for your state.
- 2). Meet with a representative of the bank where you want to open the account. Bring a copy of the death certificate for the estate owner, a letter from the estate attorney listing you as the estate's executor, two forms of picture ID to prove your identity, and the taxpayer ID number received from the IRS to the meeting.
- 3). Open the checking account in your name acting as the estate executor. The process is the same as establishing a personal bank account and requires your personal information as well as the estate information.
- 4). Transfer any cash accounts belonging to the estate into the newly established estate checking account to fund the account for use.
