How to Install Double-Hung Window Replacements
- 1). Measure the window space to make sure that the new double-hung window will fit well.
- 2). Lay down 8-inch-wide strips of moisture seal around the inside of the window frame. Slide the strips behind the existing siding. Cut diagonal slits in the corners of the strips with a utility knife, so that you can fold the seal over the frame. Staple the strips into place.
- 3). Run a carpenter's level over the sill to to see if it is level. If it isn't, place thin shims on the frame and check again until you have a level surface.
- 4). Drill pilot holes on the frame and through the shims with an electric drill. Hammer in the shims.
- 5). Squeeze a line of caulking material onto the jamb with the caulking gun.
- 6). Lift the window into the frame. Ask a friend to help you position the window. When the window is in place, ask your friend to hold the window while you hammer in a nail halfway into the top corner of the window trim. Continue to nail in the whole window.
- 7). Open and close the sashes of the pre-hung windows to check if they are moving smoothly. If they don't, adjust the window until it's squared.
- 8). Hammer nails into the window jamb. The nails should be 8 to 10 inches apart.
- 9). Caulk all of the joints where the window meets the siding, including beneath the sill.
