There are many raw materials that can be qualified in a fairly easy way.
Gold is measured in Kt, fuel is qualified by its composition and even water must meet certain quality standards.
Diamond is a commodity that is very difficult to evaluate.
The value of this gemstone is determined by the measurement of many characteristics.
The main features are the brilliance, carat and clarity! Brilliance of a diamond The 'sparkle' of a diamond is caused by the brightness.
That brilliance is caused by the fact that white light that shines on the diamond results in a lightening effect.
When a diamond is cut in the correct proportions, it will increase the reflection of light and will bring a maximum brilliance.
The cut with the most optimal sparkle and light reflection is that of the brilliant.
This round cut diamond has 57 facets and is cut with fixed proportions.
Diamond and carat A diamond also has a certain weight.
Thus 200 mg guarantees 1 carat.
As the stone is heavier, it will be more expensive.
Actually, the word 'carat' stems from the word 'carob', or the pit of the carob tree seeds.
These seeds weigh 200 mg and were used to determine the weight of the gemstone.
The clarity A diamond usually has some flaws or inclusions.
The purity is measured according to these imperfections and the less they occur, the more pure the stone is.
These were defined in clarity grades.
Included 3 (I-3): Large with the naked eye visible inclusions.
There is hardly brilliance present and because of the structure the stone can break or chip.
Included 2 (I-2): Many with the naked eye visible inclusions.
They have a clear effect on the brilliance.
Included 1 (I-1): There are inclusions visible with the naked eye.
Small Inclusions 3 (SI-3): There are many inclusions that are visible to an expert with the naked eye.
Small Inclusions 2 (SI-2): There are several inclusions that are visible with a 10x magnifying glass.
Small Inclusions 1 (SI-1): There are some inclusions that are visible with a 10x magnifying glass.
Very Small Inclusions 2 (VS-2): There are several small inclusions that are visible with a 10x magnifying glass.
Very Small Inclusions 1 (VS-1): There are some small inclusions that are visible with a 10x magnifying glass.
Very Very Small Inclusions 2 (VVS-2): There are tiny inclusions that are visible to an expert with a 10x magnifying glass.
Very Very Small Inclusions 1 (VVS-1): There is usually only one tiny inclusion that with a 10x magnifying glass even for an expert is difficult to see.
Internally Flawless (IF): There are no internal inclusions visible with a 10x magnifying glass.
However, there is a minimal external imperfection.
Flawless (FL): There are no external or internal inclusions visible with a 10x magnifying glass.
The diamonds that hold an FL label have the best purity which also is reflected in the price tag.
