Putnam County is located in the southeast portion of New York. This small county offers green meadows, many hillsides and lakeside areas, where it is common to see native flowers growing. The cool northeastern climate Putnam County offers is ideal for a wide range of flowers. - The roundleaf orchid (Amerorchis rtundifolia) is a perennial plant that is native to the state of New York and its surrounding states. This flower matures to a height of one to three feet and has simple green leaves. The roundleaf orchid grows a single stem that then produces clusters of white or pink flowers. This plant blooms from June to July and thrives in the cool climate that Putnam County provides.

The Mexican prickly poppy (Argemone mexicana) is also commonly referred to as the yellow prickly poppy. This plant is native to many states throughout the U.S., including New York. The Mexican prickly poppy prefers to grow in dry, sandy soils that are acidic in nature. As it matures, this annual plant can reach a height of one to three feet. From March through June, the Mexican prickly poppy yields bright yellow flowers that measure about 2 1/2 inches across. The bluebell bellflower (Campanula rotundifolia) is a perennial plant that matures to a height of one to three feet. This flowers is common throughout the mountain slopes, woods, meadows and prairies of Putnam County. Bluebell bellflowers prefer growing in sandy, well drained soils that are dry. This plant is tolerant of everything from full shade to full sunlight and produces blue or purple flowers from June through September. The Eastern purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) is a perennial flower that matures to a height of two to five feet. This flower is native to many states throughout the United States, including Putnam County in New York. The Eastern purple coneflower can be found in thickets, prairies, and open woods that have well-drained soils. From April through September, this plant produces bright pink and purple flowers that feature drooping petals. The center of this flower has a brownish disk that the petals fall away from.
