    Engine Design

    • The 1988 Pontiac Trans Am's base engine was a 305 cubic inch V-8 engine with 5.0 liters of displacement. This motor had a 3.74-inch bore, 3.48-inch stroke and a compression ratio of 9.3 to 1. This overhead valve motor ran on 91 octane grade gasoline or better.

    MXO Output

    • The MXO transmission option equipped this car with a four-speed automatic gearbox. When equipped with this transmission, the 1988 Trans Am produced 190 horsepower at 4,000 rpm, and 295 ft-lb of torque at 2,800 rpm.

    MM5 Output

    • The MM5 transmission option equipped the 1988 Trans Am with a five-speed manual transmission. When equipped with this gearbox, the sports car's engine generated 215 horsepower at 4,400 rpm, and 285 ft-lb of torque at 3,200 rpm.
