Instructions for a Mattress Stitch in Crochet
- 1). Lay the two pieces of crochet that you want to join side by side and right side up on a flat surface. Straighten the pieces and line up the rows evenly on each side.
- 2). Thread the tapestry needle with yarn that matches the crocheted pieces.
- 3). Run the needle through the first stitches on both pieces at the bottom edge. Take a small back stitch to secure the ends or leave a long tail that you can weave in after you're done with the seam.
- 4). Insert the needle through the first stitch on the right side of the seam. Pull the yarn through loosely. Insert the needle through the matching stitch on the other side of the seam. Keep the tip of the needle pointing toward the top of the work as you stitch.
- 5). Continue taking stitches as in the last step, alternating sides with each stitch. Gently tighten the yarn every three or four stitches, pulling the sides together.
- 6). Take one or two back stitches through both sides of the work to secure the seam. Break yarn and weave the end in by running it through several stitches in the crochet.
