How to Plant Emerald Green

    • 1). Dig up the planting site to a depth of 1 feet square, using the shovel. Crush large clods of soil with the back of the shovel and rake the area smooth.

    • 2). Dig a planting hole for the Emerald Green that is the same depth as the nursery pot in which the emerald cedar is growing, and twice the diameter. Scrape the insides and bottom of the hole with a gardening fork to loosen the soil.

    • 3). Tip the pot holding the Emerald Green on its side and slide the plant out. If the roots are wound tightly around themselves, use your fingers to gently tease the outer roots away from the rootball.

    • 4). Place the rootball in the bottom of the hole and backfill halfway with soil. Fill the hole with water from the hose, allow it to drain and then finish filling the hole with the soil. The water helps settle the soil around the rootball and removes air pockets from the soil.

    • 5). Water the Emerald Green until the soil is saturated.

    • 6). Spread a 3-inch layer of mulch on the soil, 2 inches away from the base of the plant. Spread it completely around and 1 foot beyond the widest part.
