Fertilizer for New Citrus Plants
- Use a complete fertilizer on new citrus plants, such as 8-8-8 or 10-10-10. The numbers represent the percentages of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the fertilizer. It is important that the fertilizer contains secondary and micro-nutrients, such as magnesium, manganese and copper, as well as zinc and boron.
- Newly planted citrus plants should not be fertilized until new growth begins, which generally occurs in the spring. Once the plant shows new growth, fertilize monthly through October. This will stimulate vigorous growth in the plant.
- For citrus trees, apply 1/3 lb. of fertilizer in the first week of March, 1/2 lb. in mid-April, 2/3 lb. in early to mid-June and 1 lb. in mid to late July. Small citrus plants, such as kumquats, limequats and calamondins, require only half this amount.
