Maytag Washer Makes a Loud Noise When Switching
- 1). Push in the cycle control knob on the front panel of the Maytag when the wash cycle ends and the machine has come to a complete stop. Empty any laundry from the drum to make it easier to inspect the appliance.
- 2). Tip the Maytag back on its rear legs with a friend's help to look into the washer through the bottom. If the drive belt is hanging loosely from the bottom or is broken, the transmission and motor cannot work properly. A loose or stretched belt may be causing the noise as the transmission shifts gears. If the belt is in place and tight, keep troubleshooting.
- 3). Pull on the drive shaft of the motor where the belt loops around the shaft. There should be no wiggle or play in the motor. If it moves or wobbles, the motor likely needs to be tightened on its mounting brackets.
- 4). Lower the appliance to the floor and start any cycle after determining the belt and motor are working properly. Stay with the washer to monitor its operation as it shifts through the wash cycle. If the noise occurs at each point when the cycle shifts, from agitation through draining and spinning, the Maytag's transmission is likely out of adjustment or going bad, which usually means the gears are wearing out.
- 5). Contact a repair technician to evaluate the cost of replacing the transmission versus buying another washer. Depending on the age of your appliance, it may be less expensive to purchase a new machine.
